Do Scrubs Shrink? What to Expect in the Wash

Do scrubs shrink? Some do, and most modern ones barely change. The answer depends on two things: what the fabric is made of and how much heat it sees in the wash and the dryer.

Which Scrubs Shrink the Most

Cotton is the fiber that shrinks. Scrubs with a high cotton content can tighten up, mostly in length, during the first few washes. Scrubs made mainly from polyester with a little spandex hold their size far better, which is one reason most of today's stretch scrubs are built that way.

You can find the blend on the tag inside the garment and in the product details on every item we carry.

What Causes Shrinking

  • Hot water in the wash
  • High heat in the dryer
  • Leaving scrubs in a hot dryer long after they are dry

Heat is the common thread. Lower the heat and you remove most of the risk.

How to Keep Your Scrubs the Same Size

  • Wash in cold water, inside out.
  • Tumble dry on low, or hang them to dry.
  • Take them out of the dryer while they are still slightly warm.
  • Follow the care label first. It is written for that exact fabric.

Should You Size Up Just in Case?

Usually not. If your scrubs are a polyester and spandex blend, buy the size that fits you today. If you are choosing a cotton-rich style and you are between sizes, the larger size is the safer choice. Our size charts can help, and trying them on in the store is the surest way to know.
