How to Wash Scrubs for the First Time

New scrubs should be washed before you wear them to work. A careful first wash helps protect the color and the fit, and it only takes a few simple steps.

Step by Step: The First Wash

  1. Read the care label. It is written for that exact fabric and it comes first.
  2. Turn the scrubs inside out. This protects the color and the outer surface.
  3. Wash them with similar colors. Dark and bright new scrubs can release a little dye the first time.
  4. Use cold water and a gentle or normal cycle.
  5. Use a regular detergent and skip the bleach unless the label allows it.
  6. Tumble dry on low, or hang them to dry.

Can You Wash Scrubs in a Washing Machine?

Yes. Scrubs are made to be machine washed often. They do not need hand washing or dry cleaning unless the label says so.

Every Wash After That

  • Wash work scrubs separately from the rest of your laundry.
  • Empty the pockets. Pens are the number one cause of ruined scrubs.
  • Treat stains before washing, and check that the stain is gone before the scrubs go in the dryer. Heat can set a stain.
  • Go easy on fabric softener. It can build up on stretch and moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Do not overload the machine. Scrubs need room to rinse clean.

How Many Sets Do You Need?

Having enough sets to rotate means less laundry stress and less wear on each set. Many people working full time keep one set for each shift in the week, plus a spare.
